By: Bob Hamilton

Once you make the decision to start the process of opening a dollar store a sense of urgency seems to arise. It’s taken so much time to make the decision to start your own business and to put everything together to actually move ahead. Maybe you’ve found the perfect location. All of sudden you realize there are so many tasks to be performed. Yet you really don’t know all of the steps to take and the proper order to them. It’s then you realize a better way might be to develop a plan of action for the opening of your business. Maybe there’s a way to develop a dollar store checklist to help.

Developing a dollar store checklist to facilitate the opening of a dollar store is a good idea and it’s fairly easy to do. Start by jotting down all of the tasks you currently know will need to be completed before the grand opening. This might take a little time. You can speed up the process by obtaining a book about opening a dollar store or a retail store, or speak to an expert.

List everything you currently know will need to be done. List the task and the target date for completion. If there is some other task that must be completed before the task being listed can be done be sure to note that. For example, possibly you must paint the interior walls of the space before you can put down new floor coverings.

Be sure your dollar store checklist includes space to note current status of the projects currently being completed. That way you know at a glance if there are issues or a need for a little extra focus. Also include a space to actually check off tasks as they are completed. Do just that; as a task is completed immediately put a checkmark down. This will provide instant status information and it reinforces the fact that you are making progress toward your business opening.

If you are opening a dollar store use a dollar store checklist as one of the tools to help monitor the progress of preparing your store for opening. Updates should be a daily occurrence. On a weekly basis take the time to really examine the checklist and make sure progress is going according to plan. Pay special attention to tasks that are close to coming due for completion or have missed the targeted date.
