A Quieter Place To Reserve Rome Hotels: The Vatican Surrounding Area
By Paola Lo Russo
Have you decided to spend your Holidays in Rome? Are you a traveller on you own? Did you decide to pack your stuff and leave in search of some inspiration or just to relax your mind by looking at something that centuries ago inspired superior minds such as Bramante, Bernini and Michelangelo? Well, then welcome to Rome.
If you re just looking for a quieter place to stay in Rome (Italy), the Vatican surrounding area is the one in which you should start looking for an accommodation. Whether if you prefer Rome apartments or Rome hotels, this quiet yet wonderful area will be able to suit your needs perfectly.
If you are around Termini train station, you can easily and for very little money (2 euros only) take bus line 64 and reach in about 15/20 minutes another country. Can you believe that? That is right: in no time you will reach the Vatican. Remember to dress properly! No shorts, tops or any that could be considered an offense to the holy church.
You will be immediately thrown back in 315 a.d. when, during Emperor Constantine, and only after Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire, what is today known as the most important cathedral in the Christian world was just dust and concrete. St. Peter s was at its origins and probably nobody could even imagine what important role it would have covered.
Today in fact, the Vatican is an independent country governed by the Pontiff but at the time of King of Italy, Victor Emmanuel II, it has been the cause of a battle lasted only one day, short but yet terribly violent. The reason? Power. The king of Italy wanted Rome as the capital of Italy while Pope Pio IX did not want to give up other “territories” already taken away from the Church during Renaissance.
Only the Lateran Treaty, also called the Lateran Pacts signed in 1929 decreed the mutual acceptance and recognition of two different, independent countries. The kingdom of Italy and the Vatican. If you want to experience this subtle but yet very important distinction, we do suggest to walk through Via Della Conciliazione built by Mussolini after the Lateran Pacts. Only by doing that, you will feel the almost imperceptible feeling of crossing two lines. Lines that have created controversies, wars and conflicts for centuries.
Everybody deciding to visit San Peter s Basilica knows exactly what to look for once there.
