A Number of Ways for Reducing Home Insurance Costs
By Allison Thompson
Today more than ever people are looking for ways to reduce the costs of their home insurance as costs continue to rise each year so do people s budgets get tighter and tighter. Below are a number of way in which you should be able to help to reduce these burdgeoning costs on home insurance.
Because of the society we live in today more and more homes are being fitted with some sort of security system. The best way of making the most of any home security discount that your insurance provider offers is to ensure that your house is fitted with dead bolt locks, smoke detectors/alarms, and if possible a burglar and fire alarm that is monitored. Although you do not need to have all these things set up in your home but you just have say a couple (burglar alarm and smoke detectors for example) then talk to your insurance provider and make sure that you get any savings wherever possible.
If you can keep your credit score as high as possible as many home insurance companies using credit ratings as a way of looking to see if the person is a responsible individual. Home insurance companies see responsible individuals as the type who are more likely to make less claims on their policies and this will result in them being offered lower rates.
If you are able to arrange to consolidate your insurance policies, many companies which sell home insurance will offer discounts to those people who decide their vehicles through them also. Some times the discounts offered can save a person as much as 30% off their total insurance bill, plus the added benefit is that you have the same agent for both your insurance policies.
When looking to save home insurance discuss with your agent the possibility of getting discounts if you maintain your home well. There are some home insurance companies around which will offer savings if you have a new roof, electrics, heating or the plumbing updated. Although generally these discounts do not warrant you replacing these items, but if you need to do it anyway why not make sure that you get the discounts that are available?
When actually insuring the structure of your home make sure you do not over insure. In fact the home insurance coverage you take out should not necessarily be in line with what you actually paid for the property. Often the value of the land on which your property stands is calculated on the final sales price and this should be considered when you are insuring the property (structure). It may be a good idea to contact a local builder who will be able to provide you with details on how much it would cost to construct a new home per square foot on the site where yours presently stand and that is the amount you should be quoting when taking out insurance. You will find that insurance companies will not pay anymore that it would cost to rebuild the home and this is why it is important that you have insured it correctly.
When arranging your policy there is a section where you are asked to say how much excess you are willing to have on your policy (the amount that you will pay prior to the insurance company paying the claim). However, the lower the excess you have on your policy the higher your premiums will be. Often most homeowners have an excess of about 500 on their policy, but should you raise this to 1,000 you will soon how much more your premiums will be reduced (there can be a significant saving of about 20% by raising the excess that you will pay). It will not be long before you have made up the difference between the two excesses as long as you stay claim free and it is important that you do not raise your excess to a level which you would not be able to pay.
It is important that you talk to your insurance agent at all times many of them will make sure that you get the best savings on your home insurance wherever possible, but it doesn t hurt to ask if there is anything else that can be done to improve the savings you receive. There are some companies which offer discounts that no other companies do. Some will offer discounts to those who are over 55 and retired, if you do not smoke, are in the military or law enforcement. There are some that even offer discounts to those that are single parents. So always talk to your agent and you may well be surprised just how much more you can save.
Finally, and probably one of the best bits of advice that can be given when looking for home insurance is to shop around. There are many companies on the web who can get you multiple home insurance quotes in a matter of minutes. All you need to do is fill in their online form (usually takes about 5 minutes to complete) and then hit the submit button and wait. However, once you have received the quotes it is vital that you check out the company s that have provided these quotations before signing any policy documents. There many sites out there which provide information on the more reputable insurance companies that are around.
